When To Write Love On Her Arms founder Jamie Tworkowski came to speak at Illinois State, I jumped at the chance to design the event poster for the University Program Board.
To Write Love On Her Arms is a nonprofit organization that provides rescue and hope for people struggling with mental illness, self-harm, and addiction.
This piece is a great example of working within the box. The design brief asked for the logotype to be a major focal point. That makes sense, of course, but it created limitations because of the logo’s stacked words and the poster’s small format.
I quickly remembered that my roommate had literally written the word “love” on her arm. She’d gotten a tattoo inspired by the nonprofit while she was in high school.
We shot the photo in the hallway of my college dorm with the help of a cheap plastic floor lamp and a point-and-shoot Sony camera.
The founder very much liked the poster. He autographed a copy that’s still hanging in the University Program Board office today.
